WHY MEDICAL CANNABIS?
When Hannah was ten years old, we were told that she was out of viable medical treatment options, to take her home, love her and enjoy every moment. Never once was this considered acceptable. I began my research and came across several articles pertaining to medical cannabis being successfully used for the treatment of epilepsy. Inquiring with one of Hannah’s physicians, I was quickly told this was absolutely not an option.
Several months passed and the episode ‘Weed’ aired on CNN with Dr. Sanjay Gupta (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PRLYV0_6zY8). Immediately after this aired, I received a request from another Mom that has a little girl whom suffers from severe intractable epilepsy asking me to join her in fighting for the legalization of medical cannabis in Pennsylvania. Absolutely! A group of Mom’s that all have children with a form of severe epilepsy, along with a scientist and a gentlemen suffering from chronic back pain formed a grassroots organization ‘Campaign for Compassion’. We were joined by fathers, significant others, families, friends, seasoned advocates, PA legislators with compassion and commitment! 2 years and 9 months later after dedicating all of our spare time towards the fight, April 17, 2016 Medical Cannabis became legal in Pennsylvania.
April 17, 2016 was a day we were all told would never happen in Pennsylvania! Time and time again we were told to move to a state where it was legal. We stayed committed to fight in our home state. Yes we had our ups and downs. It was certainly a rollercoaster ride of emotions. But we became a tight-knit community of advocates and we all supported each other! Our educational mission changed minds of many which has inspired many of us to stay in this industry and help other states make legalization a reality as well so that everyone has an opportunity to use this safe alternative treatment option as a first line of defense if they so choose.
Hannah has been on the Medical Cannabis for several years. We use Medical Cannabis as our first line of defense in emergency situations. She has suffered from over 100,000 seizures. By early 2017, Hannah lost her ability to walk on her own, she could not sit up without falling over, she could no longer hold anything in her hands, no longer smiled or laughed, completely non-verbal, she drooled non-stop, seized non-stop, was in and out of ICU often and had a very poor quality of life laying in bed or on her couch all day.
On December 30, 2017, Hannah smiled and laughed for the first time in 2 ½ years!
Fast forward to 2018, Hannah’s seizures have reduced tremendously. The consistent use of medical cannabis, various other key components and never giving up have given Hannah her quality of life back. Medical Cannabis is an essential ingredient in our recipe for life!
Hannah is walking on her own again independently, verbalizing in Hannahease, following direction, smiling, laughing and beginning to enjoy life again in Hannah-fashion! Hannah only had 5 seizures in March, 2018!
We believe in the power of this plant so much that we have made it our mission to continue to advocate and educate until the stigma is overturned.
